Fike DuraQuench Pro
THE NEWEST INNOVATION IN
WATER MIST FIRE SUPPRESSION
Fike DuraQuench Pro offers reliable, eco-friendly fire suppression that avoids current market forces around chemical agents, the AIM Act, PFAS, etc., and the damaging effects of a traditional discharged sprinkler system in environments with mission-critical assets and invaluables.
DuraQuench Pro supports deluge systems ideal for industrial environments and closed-head systems for data centers and light hazards, including apartments, office buildings, churches, museums and more.
DuraQuench Pro is the next evolution of this revolutionary, cost-effective water mist technology.
Product Overview
Product Data Sheet
DuraQuench Pro can be used in multiple applications:
DATA PROCESSING CENTERS PROTECTION
DuraQuench Pro is an FM Approved, single fluid, water mist system for the protection of data center processing equipment rooms/halls above and below-raised floors. Typical applications include control rooms, process control rooms, diagnostic equipment, critical systems, and equipment associated with data centers. Further details on this occupancy can be found in FM Global Property Loss Prevention Datasheet 5-32, Data Centers and Related Facilities.
Approvals
The DuraQuench Pro water mist system is FM Approved to FM5560 Appendix M and N for the protection of data center processing equipment rooms/halls, which includes control rooms, process control rooms, diagnostic equipment, and critical systems and equipment associated with data centers. The system is tested and listed to provide primary protection of the occupancy. It has been proven to extinguish fires involving cables, but it is not intended to provide equipment protection. The systems covered by this manual are for the protection of data and power cables with a maximum Fire Propagating Index (FPI) of 26 in the metric unit when tested in accordance with FM Approval Standard Class 3972, Test Standard for Cable Fire Propagation. Alternative cables with a higher FPI may be used based on the manufacturer’s intended applications for protection, and approval shall be limited to cable FPIs less than or equal to the tested cable. Do not use water mist systems to protect overhead multi-tiered open cable trays of propagating cables in data processing equipment rooms.
The systems are not intended to protect data processing equipment with packaging awaiting installation. Packaged equipment is to be located in storage and staging areas separate from data processing equipment rooms. Where storage and staging areas are unavailable, limit in-process packaged equipment in data processing equipment rooms to a temporary basis with regular removal of the packaging during the installation.
Configurations
An automatic water mist system for the protection of data center processing equipment rooms/halls shall be provided in one of the following types, listed in the order of preference based on reliability and maintenance:
A. Wet system
B. Pre-action system, Non-interlocked (activated by detection system OR nozzle operation)
C. Pre-action system, Single-interlocked (activated by detection system)
DELUGE SYSTEM FOR THE PROTECTION OF MACHINERY AND COMBUSTION TURBINES IN ENCLOSURES
DuraQuench Pro is an FM Approved, single-fluid water mist system that provides active fire protection for large machinery spaces and turbine enclosures when configured for Deluge System operation. The primary components of the DuraQuench Pro Deluge System are a fire pump skid, FM Approved fine water spray nozzles, ancillary components such as deluge control valves, backflow preventers, isolation valves, and a reliable water source (i.e., public mains, gravity tanks or other suitable water sources). These components are connected to deliver water mist to the protected enclosure to control, suppress or extinguish fires. With a minimum operating pressure of 112 psi (8 bar) and a maximum operating pressure of 232 psi (16 bar) at the system nozzles, the system is classified by NFPA 750, Standard on Water Mist Fire Protection Systems as an intermediate pressure system.
DuraQuench Pro is a fixed protection system in which the pipe system is empty (open to the atmosphere) during normal standby operation when configured as a Deluge System. The system deluge valve holds back the water supply until it is activated automatically or manually. Automatic activation of the deluge valve is accomplished by operating a fire detection system installed in the same area as the nozzles. Manual activation is accomplished by operating a manual release switch connected to the detection control panel.
Upon activation (automatic or manual), the detection system control panel simultaneously trips the deluge valve to open and activates the fire pump. The pressurized water supply generated by the fire pump is distributed to all of the system’s open-head nozzles through the system piping network producing a homogenous spray of water droplets at the nozzles as the pressurized water stream is discharged through the small orifices in the nozzles. The resulting mixture of water droplets (minimum 90% of droplets <300μm) generated by the nozzles works to provide active fire protection as described in Section 1.3
Approvals
The DuraQuench Pro deluge water mist system is FM Approved to FM5560 appendix E and F for active fire protection of machinery enclosures and turbine enclosures with exposed or insulated turbines with the following limitations:
Maximum Enclosure Volume | 0 – 11,300 ft3 (0 – 320 m3) | 11,301 – 28,252 ft3 (321 – 800 m3) | 28,253 – 162,801 ft3 (800 – 4,610 m3) |
Maximum Ceiling Height | 16.4 ft. (5 m) | 26.25 ft. (8 m) | 39.37 ft. (12 m) |
Water Density | 1.1 mm/m2 | 1.4 mm/m2 | 1.7 mm/m2 |
WET PIPE SYSTEM WITH OH-VSO NOZZLES FOR PROTECTION OF NON-STORAGE OCCUPANCIES, HAZARD CATEGORY 1 (HC-1)
DuraQuench Pro is an FM Approved single fluid water mist system for the protection of non-storage occupancies, Hazard Category 1 (HC-1). The primary components of the DuraQuench Pro Wet Pipe system consists of a fire pump skid, patented OH-VSO fine water spray nozzles, ancillary FM Approved components (i.e., control valves, backflow preventers, isolation valves, etc.), and a reliable water source (i.e., public mains, gravity tanks or other suitable water sources). These components are connected together as a system to deliver water mist to the protected enclosure to control, suppress, or extinguish fires. With a minimum operating pressure of 116 psi (8 bar) and a maximum operating pressure of 232 psi (16 bar) at the system nozzles, the system is classified by NFPA 750, Standard on Water Mist Fire Protection Systems as an intermediate pressure system.
When configured as a Wet Pipe System, DuraQuench Pro is a fixed protection system in which the pipe system is filled with pressurized water up to the nozzles during normal standby operation. A system check valve serves to maintain system pressures in the piping network. Wet pipe systems may be installed in any structure that is reliably maintained above 40°F (4°C). Closed, heat-sensitive, automatic nozzles located and spaced throughout the protected areas are used to detect a fire. Optional smoke detectors can be installed in the protected area to provide advanced notification of a fire event.
Upon activation of a nozzle due to heat from the fire, water will begin to flow immediately from the open nozzle and will cause a drop in system pressure. Depending upon the system configuration, either the flow of water or the pressure drop initiates activation of the fire pump. Activation of the pump will cause an increase in both the flow and pressure of the water supply to the open nozzles. As the pressurized water stream discharges through the small orifices in the nozzle, it creates a homogenous spray of water droplets. The resulting mixture of small and large water droplets (minimum 90% of droplets <300μm) generated by the nozzles work in tandem to provide active fire protection as described in Section 1.3.
There are two system configuration options for the DuraQuench Pro wet pipe system: 1) Straight wet pipe system, and; 2) Wet pipe system with a pressure maintenance (jockey) pump.
